Hootworthy Breaking News: Khloe’s Big Leap to 13WMAZ
Khloe never pictured herself on the news. As a kid, she was more interested in cartoons than cameras, and she’s still more comfortable asking questions than answering them. But when a family friend mentioned a local competition for 13WMAZ’s Junior Journalist program, she decided to give it a shot. Hundreds of kids auditioned. Khloe was number 28, and nerves had her doing her signature “nervous smile” the whole time. The first round flew by in a blur. Then came round two, where she had to memorize a script and deliver a live report. She walked out convinced she hadn’t done well.
Weeks later, the doorbell rang. When she opened the door, legendary 13WMAZ anchor Frank Malloy was standing there with the news: she had been chosen as one of just ten Junior Journalists. “My mind went completely blank,” she remembers. “I was like a deer in headlights.”
Her first real assignment was the “Stuff the Truck” Thanksgiving food drive. Khloe not only volunteered at the event but also reported on it, interviewing the event leader about why the work mattered. That conversation was her favorite part of the day because it reminded her that there are still people out there trying to help others.
The experience taught her a lot — especially how much work goes into journalism behind the scenes. She’s still planning a career in the medical field, but she’s grateful for the chance to try something completely new. Her biggest takeaway from it all? Patience.
Khloe gives a special shout-out to her teachers and best friends for cheering her on through every step of the journey.
Stay hootworthy, Khloe!
